Gold is a precious metal. Gold was around $250 per ounce in 2003. An ounce of gold if measured in troy ounce which is 31.1 grams. Also, a troy pound has 12 ounces and as such differs from a regular pound containing 16 ounces. Gold shot up to near $2,000 per ounce just 8 years later in the year 2011. Since then it has gone down almost as low as half of its peak in 2011 and then rebounded up to $1,200 to $1,400 per ounce in the past few years (see various gold charts online). There is not telling where the price of gold will go. The higher, the better for our clients but there are a number of factors affecting the price of gold nowadays including the government’s depreciating or appreciating the dollar as part of their global monetary policy as well as market manipulation by speculators, in addition to supply and demand economics. So will gold prices go up or down? We have no idea. Anyone telling you they know is not to be relied upon either as due to the factors affecting gold prices no one can know for sure where the prices are headed. You can do your own research by checking historic gold prices online and looking at the trends in the market but be careful as with any market there are no guarantees.

Gold Buyers use SPOT gold prices. These can be found on websites such as goldprice.org or kitco.com or other sites. Be careful if you are using these websites as some are not live prices and require a subscription for live gold prices while others should be free to use. Most cash for gold places in San Diego use the spot price to determine what they will pay you for your gold. In other words, whether the market is up or down on the day that you want to sell your gold in San Diego, the spot price dictates how much you will get paid. Your San Diego gold buyers will look at a number of factors in determining how much to pay you for your gold. These include the spot gold prices, their costs in purchasing and processing your gold and the level of profit they are looking to make. As such you will see some places offer you more cash for gold in San Diego than others. Gold & Diamond Buyers of San Diego is proud to be paying top dollar cash for gold in San Diego to our clients for many years.

Here is a little information about gold.

Gold is mined from gold mines or extracted from mother earth through other methods. There are usually two sources of gold. There is gold that is mined from the earth (new gold if you will) and there is recycles gold (such as used jewelry that is sold for cash). Pure gold is referred to as 24 karat gold, which means the gold is pure and not mixed with any other metals or materials.

By itself, gold is a soft metal. It can be bent out of shape if it is not mixed with other materials that are stronger. Generally when you buy a gold chain there is stainless steel used in the chain’s clasp to keep it from snapping, although the rest of the chain is gold. This is because steel is stronger than gold, even when the gold is mixed with other metals, such as 14 karat gold.

So what is 14 karat gold? Generally when pure gold is mixed with other metals its purity (or karats) goes down. So if a chain is made up of 58% gold and 42% other metals, that is considered 14 karat gold. You can easily determine the metal purity by dividing the karat of your gold by 24. For example, if you have a 10 karat gold chain, to find out what much of your chain’s weight is made up of pure gold you divide 10 by 24 and get 41%. So if you chain weighs 100 grams and it is 10 karat gold, then there are 41 grams of pure gold in your chain. The other weight is not gold. The price of pure gold can be found on many websites such as goldprice.org or kitco. Be careful when checking the price of gold as some websites are not realtime prices and you may get prices that are not refreshed properly, as gold prices can move up or down by tens or even hundreds of dollars per ounce per day.

Gold prices are generally shown in price per ounce. By ounce is meant Troy Ounce, which is made up of 31.1 grams. (food ounces are 28 grams but do not apply to metals). Also, a troy pound is 12 ounces, not 16. So be careful not to mix up ounces meant for measuring fluids with troy ounces.

Once you know the purity of your gold (also referred to by karats), and you know the gold price per ounce, you can divide the price of pure gold per ounce by 31.1 and get the price of pure gold per gram. This may sound complicated but it is actually very simple.

Your local cash for gold place generally uses a similar formula to adjust for the purity of your gold (or its karats) and then determine what the gold SPOT prices are. Then they build in their expenses and profit necessary to make a transaction and offer you a cash for gold price for your gold jewelry, gold chain, gold bracelets, gold coins or gold bars.

With a little information you can know how the price of your jewelry piece is determined when you sell it.

Also, keep in mind, a lot of times when a piece of gold is stamped 14k, it is not necessarily 58% pure gold. Sometimes jewelers and jewelry manufacturers mark a jewelry piece 14K gold when it has lower gold amounts (such as 51% gold instead of 58%). It is important to buy gold from a trusted dealer or well known dealer with a good reputation. When gold is really 14 karat (or 58% pure) it is referred to as plump 14 karat. Many cash for gold places and professional gold buyers rarely see true plump 14 karat gold. The same applies to 18 karat gold (18 karat means 75% pure gold) and all other karats of gold.

By using the formula above you can easily determine how much gold is supposed to be in your jewelry piece. The best cash for gold places try to estimate your gold content accurately. Some use acid tests, some also have electronic instruments and some have X-ray guns or X-ray machines. By having accurate ascertainment of your gold content, you should get paid accurately for your gold content.
